Malta and the 8 EU Nations Unite to Transform the Mediterranean into a Green Energy Hub

In a powerful move towards a sustainable future, nine southern EU nations, including Malta, have pledged to turn the Mediterranean into a renewable energy hub. Their focus is on harnessing offshore wind and solar power, aiming to tackle climate change and boost green energy across borders.

At the MED9 Energy Ministerial Meeting, officials from Cyprus, Slovenia, Malta, Croatia, Greece, Italy, France, Portugal, and Spain committed to joint renewable energy projects, urging the European Commission to lead a new study on the region's energy potential. By eliminating red tape, they hope to attract investors and accelerate these projects.

With the Mediterranean offering vast potential, countries are exploring offshore platforms, wave-generated energy, and floating solar units. The Aegean, for example, is noted for having some of the highest wind power capacities in the EU, with Greece targeting 2 GW of wind power by 2030.

As southern Europe faces the growing threats of climate change, these nations are stepping up to lead the green energy transition. Spain’s Energy Director Joan Groizard emphasized that Mediterranean countries “can and must be at the forefront” of this global effort. Moreover, Italy's ambassador, Federica Ferrari Bravo, highlighted that affordable green energy is not only crucial for sustainability but also a "powerful tool for peace.

Stay tuned as the Mediterranean is set to become a global leader in renewable energy!
