On World Refugee Day 2023, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Malta is partnering with Spazju Kreattiv Cinema to showcase two compelling films that shed light on the experiences of refugees.
The event aims to honor those who have been forced to flee their homes and promote the theme of "Hope Away From Home" by emphasizing the power of inclusion and finding solutions for refugees in new countries.
The films featured in the festival offer emotional journeys that explore both the universal aspects and unique personal stories of refugees.
The first film, "Exodus," tells the story of Sam, a people smuggler, who reluctantly saves Amal, a 12-year-old girl searching for her missing family in the Syrian war. Their paths intertwine as they embark on a journey that challenges Sam's initial hesitation.
The UNHCR Malta Country office will introduce the screening of "Exodus."
The second film, "Drift," follows Jacqueline, a young refugee who arrives alone and penniless on a Greek island. Struggling to survive and confront her past, she forms a friendship with a tour guide, and together they find the strength to move forward.
The screenings will take place on June 20 and June 22, 2023, at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema. Admission is free, but reservations are required.
