Walking Together Through Stories of Courage and Belonging

What does it mean to leave behind a place you once called home? What does it take to rebuild your life elsewhere, to find belonging in a new society, and to keep moving forward despite uncertainty?

These were some of the questions at the heart of “ORRAJT – On the Road: Courageous Routes, Shared Journeys”, an intercultural walk organised by GMD Training and Consultancy Services Ltd as part of Refugee Week Malta 2026. This event is happening in two sessions. The first walk took place on Tuesday 16 June from 6pm to 8pm, bringing participants together to walk from Gżira to Msida while listening, sharing and reflecting on migration and courage.

The walk began at Bus Stop Lounge in Gżira, near the mural painted for Refugee Week Malta 2024. This starting point already carried a strong meaning and set the tone for an activity rooted in memory, solidarity and community. After a general introduction, the tour began and included several stops at notable locations along the route.

Each stop opened a different conversation. Through personal stories, historical reflections and collective discussion, we were encouraged to think about the meaning of Qlubija, or courage: the courage to leave, to rebuild and to find one’s place in a new society.

One particularly memorable moment invited us to dance together, showing how movement and joy could create connection beyond words. Another stop focused on history, colonisation and the symbolism of the sea, a powerful reminder of journeys, arrivals, borders, and the many emotions linked to migration.

We also discussed the role of food as a bridge between people, cultures and memories. It emphasised how something as simple as sharing flavors or talking about traditional dishes could pave the way for meaningful exchanges and foster a sense of belonging.

The second and last session will happen on Friday 19 June. You can still register here.

ORRAJT – On the Road: Courageous Routes, Shared Journeys was more than a walk. It was an invitation to slow down, listen and recognise the courage carried in every journey.
