Be it In the bustling construction sites of Malta, in the catering industry or in office settings, young African men work long hours, striving for a better life. To escape the stress of their demanding workweeks, a group of these immigrants has launched a heartwarming initiative: bi-monthly Sunday football matches.
Every second Sunday, not less than 20 of them gather at a local field, exchanging their work attires for soccer cleats. The idea is simple but powerful: to create a space for relaxation, camaraderie, and cultural exchange. They share one view on Football:
Football is a universal language, It's a way for us to come together, have fun, and forget about the week's struggles.
After the matches, the group doesn’t disperse immediately. They gather for a communal meal, sharing dishes from their diverse backgrounds, cooked by volunteers or ordered from an African restaurant.
This ritual has become a cherished tradition, a time for storytelling, laughter, and, occasionally, a few drinks.
It's more than just a game,It's about building a community, supporting each other, and keeping our spirits high.
As they share stories and experiences, these young men not only find a sense of belonging but also strengthen their ties to the Maltese community.
