According to Eurostat’s 2023 report, Malta ranks among the worst in the EU for home energy efficiency improvements, with only 8.4% of its population living in upgraded dwellings. This is significantly lower than the EU average of 25.5%, placing Malta alongside Greece and Cyprus at the bottom of the list.
The report highlights the limited progress Malta has made in renovating residential properties to enhance energy performance. The upgrades considered include thermal insulation improvements, window replacements, and the installation of more efficient heating systems.
The data also shows that the rate of home energy upgrades is low across all income groups in Malta, with 6.7% of vulnerable households and 8.8% of other households benefiting from such renovations. In contrast, countries like Estonia and the Netherlands have nearly half of their at-risk populations living in upgraded homes.
